September 2013 Bestsellers & updates

October in Massachusetts can only mean colder days, longer nights, pumpkins everywhere, and stories about Ghosts, Zombies, scary Creatures, and everyone looking forward to Halloween. But! Before that, we have our regular bestseller chart.

September was really busy at Weightless, mostly with magazines as per usual, but this time there were some books that made a real jump up the overall chart. First: magazines. Clarkesworld Magazine was miles ahead of everyone else with renewals coming in very strong. Jumping in at #2 was Beneath Ceaseless Skies with their BCS 5th Anniversary Ebook Sale. Deals, deals, deals!

Interzone (which, with Black Static, is now available in epub and mobi subscriptions) just sneaked onto the charts and the first issue of The Dark showed Sean Wallace’s new magazine has already started to find its readership. Meanwhile in the latest (redesigned!) issue of the New York Review of Science Fiction they note that their anniversary issue, #300, was downloaded for free more than 8,000 times. (Get it here if you missed it.)

In books, Michael Cisco’s titles are proving very popular with The Divinity Student going from #2 last month to #1 in September. Magazines took no spots in the top five, perhaps because the books were so strong and also the appearance of the two Prime Year’s Best titles. Both look well worth the money, boiling down last year’s fiction to a strong selection of dark fantasy and horror or science fiction and fantasy. Small Beer had two titles in the top 5, our re-issue of Peter Dickinson’s mystery (or is it a tragedy?) Death of a Unicorn and Greer Gilman’s unique Ben Jonson, Detective, novella, Cry Murder! in a Small Voice.
